“Dorothy Thorpe (1901–1989) was an American mid-century modern designer known for her distinctive glassware, ceramics, and Lucite items. Starting in the 1930s, she applied signature sandblasted designs, like floral motifs inspired by Hawaii and the iconic "Atomic Splash" geometric patterns, to glass blanks she purchased from other manufacturers. Her company, Dorothy Thorpe Originals, became famous for its festive, silver-banded "Roly Poly" tumblers and the "Allegro" sterling silver-rimmed glassware, which gained renewed popularity after appearing on the TV show Mad Men.”
“Thorpe began her design career during the Great Depression, when she discovered a way to turn a broken bottle into a drinking glass tumbler by etching her initials into it.”
