In the myth of Cupid and Psyche, Psyche, a mortal woman of extraordinary beauty, attracts so much admiration that the jealous goddess Venus (Aphrodite in Greek mythology) commands her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a hideous creature, but Cupid falls for her himself, secretly whisking her away to a magical palace where he visits her only at night, forbidding her from ever seeing his face; however, due to her sisters' manipulation, Psyche's curiosity leads her to try and see Cupid's true form, causing him to flee, leaving her to complete a series of perilous tasks set by Venus in order to be reunited with him; ultimately, through perseverance, Psyche proves her love and is granted immortality, allowing her to live happily ever after with Cupid.
